BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) C DESIGN OFFICE EXPANSION C DESIGN | CHARLOTTE, NC BEAUTY ON A BUDGET (HONORABLE MENTION) Following a major expansion in 2019, the firm continued to experience steady growth over the next five years, ultimately creating the need for another workplace expansion. To accommodate this growth, the project team developed a thoughtful and economical solution that balances functionality with the firm’s culture of creativity. The design transforms an existing mezzanine—previously non-functional and considered un-leasable—into a highly efficient workspace connected to the main office through a new monumental stair. This strategic move not only maximized the use of underutilized square footage but also created a sense of continuity within the office environment. The expansion provides eight additional workstations, a 30-person training room, a video conferencing room, a small break area, and a relocated 10-person conference room, which allowed for an open collaboration space on the main level. Economics played a significant role in shaping the project, driving smart, cost-effective design decisions without sacrificing quality or character. Relocating the large conference room to the mezzanine reduced construction costs while reinforcing efficiency, and the overall design emphasizes both practicality and a strong reflection of the firm’s identity. Ultimately, the expansion supports the firm’s long-term growth while showcasing its creative spirit in a resourceful and inspiring way.

BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) NOVANT FORSYTH MEDICAL CENTER | CRITICAL CARE TOWR GRESHAM SMITH | WINSTON SALEM, NC HEALTHCARE INPATIENT (WINNER) The Novant Forsyth Medical Center Critical Care Tower project represents a pivotal investment in advancing healthcare infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As part of Novant Health’s commitment to providing exceptional care, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to address critical care needs while enhancing patient outcomes and promoting a healing environment. Novant Forsyth Medical Center has served as a cornerstone for healthcare in the region, providing a wide range of medical services to a diverse and expanding population. With increasing patient volumes and evolving healthcare needs, the demand for specialized critical care services has grown significantly. The existing infrastructure required modernization to accommodate advancements in medical technology, improve patient comfort, and support efficient workflows for healthcare providers. One major challenge that drove the initial planning and design of this project was to create a new entrance to the whole medical facility. Many patients and family members had given feedback that the facility was difficult to navigate and did not give much direction to where they were supposed to go. Through this project, a new front door with great design presence was established. Additionally, new design wayfinding standards were developed and implemented throughout the facility so that the transformation extended beyond the new tower. Local imagery was used throughout the new building to not only provide a connection to the community, but also as a part of the wayfinding design – designating each elevator lobby with an image so that users can located themselves within the whole building. The project also expanded the existing facilities surgical suites to better fit the capacity of the local community. Challenges arose through the extensive phasing that was required to keep the surgery suite running while also updating their existing suites and making it more functional for staff and patients alike. The Novant Forsyth Medical Center Critical Care Tower is more than just a physical structure; it is a transformative endeavor aimed at improving lives. By addressing critical care needs with innovative design and advanced medical capabilities, the tower will: • Enhance Access: Provide the community with expanded access to specialized care. • Support Staff: Empower healthcare professionals with thoughtfully designed spaces to deliver their best work. • Improve Outcomes: Foster an environment conducive to faster recovery and better overall health outcomes. • Strengthen the Community: Reaffirm Novant Health’s role as a trusted healthcare provider in the region. This project underscores Novant Health’s dedication to excellence in healthcare delivery and its vision for building healthier communities for generations to come. The critical care tower is not only a response to immediate needs but also a forward-looking investment in the future of healthcare in Forsyth County.

BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) MODUS BOB, ARTE, ABE, & ARNE COLLECTION STUDIO TK | KELLY ADDESSO + CINDY SUAREZ INNOVATIVE PRODUCT/MATERIAL (WINNER) Produced in partnership with a furniture brand in South Somerset, UK, and designed by Michael Sodeau, Bob, Art, Abe, and Arne share a highly innovative and environmentally conscious mindset. The warm and tactile Bob Cork Stool features a curved base with a concave seat. The iconic holes make it easy to move while adding a distinctive design element. Art is the smallest table, featuring an angled cutout that perfectly holds books. The medium-sized Abe has a lower shelf running around its entire perimeter. The largest table, Arne, is designed to function best as a central coffee table, showcasing a concentric cutout on top. Bob, Art, Abe, and Arne are made entirely from waste materials generated during the production of wine bottle corks and bonded with a solvent-free binder. Cork is naturally water-repellent, easy to clean, and offers sound-insulating properties. The products can either be mechanically recycled into new products or biodegraded at the end of life. The cork oak forests of the Mediterranean, supplying the recycled cork, are biodiversity hotspots. Cork oaks can be stripped of their cork every 9 years without causing permanent damage to the tree, making cork a truly regenerative material. Supporting cork harvesting helps to preserve its economic viability and unique habitat.

BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) BEST IN SHOW, HEALTHCARE OUTPATIENT (WINNER) ELLA B. SCARBOROUGH COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER GENSLER | CHARLOTTE, NC GOVERNMENT | INSTITUTIONAL (WINNER) The Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center (CRC) in Mecklenburg County is a new net-zero ready, 103,000-square-foot base building and interiors project in Charlotte, North Carolina. The transformative facility is one of five planned CRCs in the county and is optimized to promote health and wellness through trauma-informed design. A top priority of this project was decentralizing one location to serve a multitude of people at five different CRC locations. The challenge in providing a full range of integrated health and wellbeing services in one building was to do so in a safe, secure, calm-inducing manner. Clear wayfinding and an organized configuration of zones were vital to guiding visitors through a neighborhood of resources with confidence and comfort. An ability to see space end-to-end, with professional consultation along the way, was essential to providing a complexity of services with clarity of sequence. The new facility design planned to incorporate select community partners with County Health and Human Service agency departments, with the goal of assisting individuals and families on their journey from dependence to independence. Destigmatized, holistic delivery of care required both open, light-filled, inviting public spaces and private, sanctuary-like environments for social support counseling. The CRC strives to strengthen both individuals and families in the community by offering a dignified, accessible, and empowering experience. A commitment to Net Zero Energy sustainability standards aimed to elevate health and wellness for the staff and patrons while representing a bold model of resilience and carbon emissions reduction for the community. Designing transformative interiors and outdoor spaces for employees further reinvigorates and empowers CRC workers in their passion for service. The building’s performance goals reflect Mecklenburg County’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term operational efficiency. The Ella B. Scarborough CRC was challenged to provide a full life cycle of health and human service programming in a positive, well-coordinated setting. It was critical that navigation of the newly constructed space would reduce stress and encourage trust. The project’s success lies in its ability to deliver complex services in a setting that feels intuitive, welcoming, and restorative—an environment where architecture actively supports healing and human connection.
