Spider Woman Textiles

Charlotte, NC

Brittany Howze (Queens University of Charlotte)

Spider Woman Textiles was designed in three shipping containers to support a Navajo couple who made textiles to sell to the community. The couple wanted to live in a sustainable way as well as wanting to keep their Navajo traditions alive. The clients not only wanted to live out of their space but also wanted to use it as a commercial space to sell and make their textiles. For our clients, my partner and I did research on the traditions and culture of the Navajo community allowing us to specify materials, and furniture to keep the traditions and culture of the Navajo community to help feel at home. The programming called for a living and workspace for the couple as well as a flex space, dining area that can seat up to ten people, and a guest bedroom and bath in addition to a master bed and bath, photography area, makerspace, showroom, Cashwrap-area and storage, all to fit comfortably in the size of three shipping containers.
