Wake Technical Community College General Education Building
Wendell, NC
BSA Lifestructures
The Wake Technical General Education Building (GEB) at the new 106-acre academic campus will provide core general classrooms and student services to an underserved student population. Designed to optimize student success and engagement, the building will serve as the gateway to campus by providing students with an inclusive and welcoming experience. The GEB contains amenities that will encourage students to remain on campus, thus creating a vibrant sense of community and instilling a feeling of identity and place.
A preserved green wall focal point in the 2-story lobby uses the evidence-based biophilic design strategy to improve the cognitive and emotional health of those who experience it. The monumental stair, in concert with transparent stair towers that flank the campus green, encourages their use, promoting the physical well-being of students and faculty.
Circulation is organized around the perimeter of the building, providing access to daylight and views for students between focused time in the classroom, promoting wellness as a healthy destination.
Sustainability strategies such as solar panels and energy-efficient building systems are an integral part of the design of the building and contribute to the campus’ sustainability goals. Maximizing the quantity and visibility of photovoltaic panels on the roof makes the GEB a physical reminder of its commitment to the environment.
The GEB establishes the standard for the campus’s future academic buildings and is an example of the College’s critical success factors: student-focused, access & equity, high performing, welcoming, and flexible & adaptable.
