Clemson Athletics had two pressing needs: to provide modern facilities that match the intensity of Division I athletics, and to refresh the Volleyball spaces inside the aging Jervey Gym and Jervey Athletic Center. Student-athletes needed state-of-the-art environments for strength and conditioning, cutting-edge therapies, and flexible nutrition zones, all designed with safety and durability in mind. At the same time, fans and donors deserved upgraded gathering spaces that reinforced the excitement of Clemson Athletics.

The University envisioned its new Watt Family Athletic Performance & Wellness Center (PAWC) as a comprehensive resource for student-athletes. This facility would be specifically designed to support student-athlete recovery, nutrition, and mental well-being, integrated into a branded environment that celebrates Clemson’s identity.

The project had to reconcile new construction with renovation. The new PAWC facility would be connected to the historic Jervey Gym and Athletic Center, so the project needed to create consistency across environments. The overarching challenge was to design interiors that could perform at the highest level of functionality, flexibility, and durability, while also inspiring athletes and reinforcing Clemson pride at every turn.
