Adaptive Reuse – Honorable Mention

Hood Construction Company

Columbia, SC

Garvin Design Group

When Hood Construction selected the single-story brick building at 1215 Shop Road for its new home the company made a commitment to preserve the historic features that point to the building’s past. Constructed for the Citadel Shirt Corporation in 1950 and expanded to house several different garment manufacturers throughout the late 20th century, the building retained its large steel windows, heavy trusses, and barrel-vaulted ceilings. Interior design for the building’s rehabilitation sought to honor the building’s long local history and create a comfortable, modern office space befitting its new tenant and use.

Interior space is strategically organized to preserve the building’s historic sense of volume. Departments are organized along a central, circular hallway that wraps around centrally located conference and training rooms; private offices are placed along the outside walls. Large expanses of glass and interior storefront systems are held below the preserved trusses, providing sightlines throughout the building, and maintaining its historic sense of openness. New interior walls are carefully placed around restored historic steel windows and heavy fire risers.

Hood Construction Company’s brand colors appear in fixtures and finishes that are both reminiscent of the building’s rough-hewn past and befitting its modern use. An accent wall in the central catering space features penny tiles in Hood’s signature copper hue. Custom patterned carpeting dampens the noise of foot traffic in the open office space and masks dirt tracked inside on work boots. Wood patterned LVT in corridors mirrors the warm wood in the historic barrel-vaulted ceiling above.
