Corporate Small – Honorable Mention

Durham Studio

Durham, NC

Perkins+Will

Kenneth Luker (design principal), Michael Rantilla (project manager), Jessica Braverman (project architect), Maria Peterson (senior interior designer)

The Durham Studio relocates this 50+ person design office from a suburban office park to the second floor of a 1960’s Brutalists style office building in downtown Durham, North Carolina. The move accomplishes a more compact, efficient and sustainable office environment by reducing lease area from 317sf/desk to 193sf/desk and the new urban context provides a more appealing and inspiring setting for staff of all ages. The design recognizes architecture’s migration from working as individuals to team oriented design efforts. In response, the studio is compact with multiple teaming environments located central to the studio. The studio is characterized by an open and efficient arrangement of space that connects employees to each other, the work they do and their Durham context. This core is also a gallery, exhibiting tangible evidence of architectural craft while the surrounding studio exhibits the process of that craft. Material connections and work by local artisans can be seen from every angle around our space. Pin-up spaces, a model shop, 3D printers and VR Studio are accessible as ways to express the craft and showcase different aspects of our process to visitors.

Judges Comments:

“Simplicity of the building shines through. Great views from almost every space. Use of materials are well selected. Strong use of lighting to support the architecture and add interest. The plan is clear/intuitive and adaptable over time.”
