Unchanged since opening in 2003, dining/ bar spaces at this life plan community were aesthetically outdated and operationally inefficient. Circulation was a key problem. Budget required changes to remain within the existing footprint. Space planning became like a puzzle box; key spaces were unmovable; all shifts needed to be highly impactful on multiple levels. A series of strategic spatial adjustments resolved operational issues; furniture and finishes updates addressed the outdated aesthetic. The resulting suite of bar and dining areas better serves existing residents and helps attract new residents. Enclosing a seldom-used covered porch resolved circulation issues, separating access to formal dining from the café, and creating a casual space used daily by residents and for overflow on holidays and special occasions. Storefront glass and distinct finishes reinforce the separation. Non-structural columns cluttering the cafe were removed; remaining columns were re-wrapped with a smaller profile. An enclosed prep kitchen and touchdown spots support the wait service model; the buffet is used on Sundays and holidays. The cafe now has a casual atmosphere and community table. Colors provide visual continuity with main commons areas. Tables – including new round tops – are arranged to assist with flow. Formal dining is now elegantly calm. Layers of detail create a rich textural feel. The chef’s table is set apart by several re-wrapped columns. Sliding glass doors create a private dining space or close the area off when not needed. The bar is now greatly expanded; residents can gather for a drink or informal meal.
