Charlotte Douglas International Airport/Concourse A Expansion Phase 1

Charlotte, NC

Perkins + Will in association with C Design

As the first of a three pier expansion to Concourse A, the Phase I project was a paradigm shift in CLT’s approach to passenger experience and it set a new standard for design and finishes across the entire airport campus. The design team looked across the existing airport for design inspiration and the new building reinterprets familiar roof forms and materials into a fresh new architectural character. Barrel-vaulted spaces with exposed structure in the existing terminal are re-envisioned as curved metal ceilings with slightly reflective finish that evoke the idea of an airplane wing. The roof/ceiling opens asymmetrically to the north allowing for light and views, but also adding motion and character to the spaces. Glass, aluminum, stainless steel and high performance panels create a sleek and restrained material palette that evokes the elegance and careful detailing of aircraft. The minimalist palette provides a canvas for interior artwork by Refik Anadol that abstracts flight data into ever-changing forms, colors and simulated textures. Lighting sequences are tied to the rhythm of vertical exterior fins and create a memorable brand for the airport’s main entry. The undulating fins work to provide interest from the interior of the passenger connector, providing views to the entry road. This works both as a standalone element and the future concourses will continue the language to complete the ½ mile of lighting and pattern. The connector also allows for views to the airside and the constant stream of aircraft activity.
