Barbour Spangle Design

When a local university decided that their on-campus, farm-to-fork restaurant needed to be as fresh as their food, our team stepped in to create an energetic yet functional space. With the inspiration of an eclectic eatery, our goal was to transform this space from a traditional on-campus restaurant to a bright and modern celebration of local farms, food and art. The client’s objective was to increase the flexibility of the space and its uses by installing steadfast and durable finishes and easy-to-move furniture. To create the right atmosphere we included photography from local farms, colorful furniture, and engaged with an alumni of the school to create a hand-drawn map of North Carolina with location points to highlight all of the farms that source the eatery. One primary challenge for this project was the pre-existing installment of cherry wood wall paneling and matching laminate case goods. The university was unable to change these elements as they tied to the overall building design, but the team installed white subway tile backsplash to brighten up the darker colors. Because of our past relationship and rapport, the client was willing to expand their budget in order to accomplish the overall vision. By allowing for the necessary budget, as well as allowing for plenty of time for preparation, the project went smoothly, and the designers were able to keep the overall vision intact from beginning to end. This updated space is now as welcoming and positive as the clean-eating options it serves to students!
