Our task was to design the east coast office for a Colorado-based construction company. They desired a combination of closed offices and open cubicle space but wanted to avoid a traditional office feel. Their goal was to have clean lines and a contemporary aesthetic, encourage collaboration, and to showcase their branding. Our goals were to provide a fresh, unique design and a distinct experience for staff and visitors. Our client was working within a modest budget and footprint, so we were challenged to do a lot with a little. The wood slat wall, which follows the shape of the mountain range near their Broomfield, Colorado home office, parallels the building’s exposed wind bracing to create a privacy screen between workstations and public spaces. The few walled offices have glass fronts but an open ceiling, allowing individual focus without total disconnection. The main conference room has a soaring ceiling and glass garage door, which promotes collaboration. To achieve great design on a minimal budget, we focused on using common materials that were low cost and high impact and worked with the client to create details they could construct themselves. They built the slat wall from dimensional lumber and basic suspension cables; wall paint was used to create the bold wall graphic that reflects the client’s brand colors, and to emphasize the angular soffit. Expanding on the wall graphic, we used angles as a consistent design theme to give the project a modern feel and to draw the eye across the space.
