56 State Street Hotel

Charleston, SC

LS3P

Natural beauty, rich history, and cultural significance gives way to an eclectic taste reminiscent of the well-traveled. Charleston’s newest proposed jewel, Hotel Volant, is a 50-room curated experience where nature and refined hospitality soar.

56 State Street, planned to be named Hotel Volant, is a 50-room boutique hotel being designed at the corner of State and Cumberland Street. This location is nestled in the busy French Quarter district notable for a number of iconic Charleston tourist destinations. A 2-story lobby greets guests upon their immediate entry and expansive windows invite onlookers to join in on the experience. A lobby bar at the far end of the space is open to both hotel guests and the public. The mezzanine houses a club room that serves guests a breakfast offering each morning and acts as a family room in the afternoon. In addition to this space being available for events, there is a 4th floor meeting space that boasts of city, bridge, and water views. Hotel Volant aims to be a natural haven for locals and travelers near and far. The eclectic twist seeks to capture the essence of low country hospitality– the natural allure, refined taste, and culturally diverse influences.

• The 2-story lobby greets guests with a design reminiscent of a grand oak tree. Wood veneer encapsulates an arched feature wall, a tiered ceiling is painted a mossy-green, and pendants drip ever so slightly into the space. The incorporation of a crepe myrtle in the reception desk introduces the unexpected.

• Along the balcony wall, wallcovering at the 2nd level immolates Spanish moss cascading from the canopy above. The balcony itself speaks to French Quarter architecture’s wrought iron work that’s seen in both balconies as well as intricate gates.

• Lobby inspiration imagery, finishes and early selections seek to merge organic, painterly motifs with the traditionally established and refined. Hotel Volant play homage to the intricate balance found in nature’s grand design – harmoniously blending sophistication and the natural world.

• The lobby bar invokes a moodier atmosphere where finishes and fixtures continue to draw from the lush landscape. Decorative lighting fixtures resemble palmetto fronds, layered metals play with light, and wood features steal the show.

• The lobby bar nestled within the warm wood veneer, the bar creates a pocket – much like a dense maritime forest at dusk. The mysterious allure of deep greens, low lighting casting a warm, golden glow dancing across the room, and indigenous artwork create intimate moments that celebrate retreat.

• Animal print carpet overstates the room and is anchored by a bed with a woven headboard and luxuriously upholstered bed base. The settee along the window wall contrasts the rest of the room with a neutral tribal pattern. Subtle, frond patterned sheers soften the bold, black window mullions.

• At the rear of the bath, a spacious millwork component houses a wardrobe with mirrored fronts, concealed undercounter refrigerator and bank of drawers for additional storage. The wall at the foot of the bed features a focal moment where television and combination dresser-desk accompany a gold foil cloudscape wallcovering.

• The guest rooms aim to be subtle yet inviting. Study of healing environments and biophilia show that access to nature is key. From the antelope print carpet and wood-look LVT on the floor, to cloud-motif wallcovering, and to the ceiling fixtures resembling bulrush, these guestrooms are designed to redefine rest and relaxation.
