Adaptive Reuse + Historical Preservation – Honorable Mention
Furman Company – Southern Tide
Greenville, SC
McMillan Pazdan Smith
Southern Tide, a nationally recognized coastal lifestyle apparel brand, relocated its headquarters to the historic Borden Building near Unity Park in Greenville, South Carolina. The Borden building was originally built in 1924 and until 1991 was a significant part of the local ice cream production industry by housing the Greenville Ice Cream Company originally and later Borden Ice Cream. Southern Tide was eager to leave their lease in an lackluster office building and find a space more suitable for their creative nature that could provide inspiration for their brand. As an adaptive reuse project, the Borden building provided character that Southern Tide desired from the peeling paint on the brick and steel columns to the exposed concrete slab, most of which remain today.
